I am thinking of learning flute.
For starting, I don't want to buy a really expensive flute, would prefer cheaper priced and of decent quality.
Please recommend, which brand and which model, Thanks!
Some good brands are Yamaha, Jupiter, Gemeinhardt. Armstrong and Blessing. Although some say the Blessings and Jupiter are bad Flutes because they require lots of repairs. But I play on a Yamaha/ Blessings and my students play on Jupiter and I have had no trouble with either! But I would go with the Yamaha if I had to choose one for a beginner!

I am a middle school band director and would like to buy a flute. I know the main brands but I do not want to spend a lot of money. Should I bother with a student flute or look for a professional one?
I am a professional flutist and teacher and competition judge in NY - and taught middle school for 34 years. Gemeinhardt and Armstrong are AWFUL - maybe 25 years ago they were OK, but they are at the END of the list now. Look at a used Yamaha in the 300 or 400 series. A Pearl, a Jupiter, (a diMedici if you can find a 1000 series used!), or an Emerson will stand you in good stead. You should be able to find these USED for well under a grand. If your budget - and playing possibilities - are higher, then consider and Avanti (not out yet - soon . . ) or an Azumi. The big thing now is Big Names making step-up flutes, with a great headjoint, and a plated body. Deal; with a real FLUTE house - Jeff Weissman in NYC, or Carolyn Nussbaum, or even Flute World. J.L. Smith is a possibility, or Phil Unger in NYC. Do not get a flute from a big music warehouse place - you know what they are - because they sell things As they arrive from the factory - not in perfect adjustment. Your students rely on you to set a good example - you need to be well set up.

I love Michael Flatley's flute music, and I would love to know what flute(s) he plays.
At the moment I have a Buffet&Crampon flute but I'm looking for a better make. I was wondering what kind of flute Michael Flatley plays, as it sounds as if it has excellent quality.
That flute isn't the same as the one we call a concert flute. He plays what's commonly called "Irish Flute" and is properly called a simple system flute.

You can get close to that sound on a concert flute with a wooden headjoint (such as Bigio) and even closer with a full wooden flute. But, the simple system they use for that Irish music is not in the same scale as our concert flute and it has a different bore design - we can never get the same sound on a metal concert flute.
That's why I own a bunch of different flutes. ?
