My family makes Native American Style flutes as a hobby and we are wondering how the original flutes were made and what tools where used.
It sometimes depends on the tribe as to the material. Generally they're made of either wood, bone, bark, and even pottery. A few reed instruments existed with wood and bark reeds, as well.

I've made a few with stone tools and fire.
best results, were river cane, reed, and bamboo.
bird bones but they have to be from a VERY large bird, turkey on up. Heron leg bones work very well.
The modern hard wood flutes, I was unable to do with stone and fire. I've heard of making a divot with an ember to make the tube but this proved extremely time consuming and did not work well. While it CAN be done, I don't think it would have been.
I've never found any example of a hard wood flute pre-contact.
